We come to Genesis 18 and we find that the Lord has already promised to both Abraham and Sarah a son which we talked about the last few blogs. These promises of blessing are given throughout the Bible. Some are directed to Israel, some to specific people and some to us as believers. However, not all of God's promises are blessings. We have an incredible evil city called Sodom, and with it another city called Gomorrah. These cities are a clear example of mankind's rejection of God. The term sodomy, used in describing various disgusting intimate actions, stems from this passage of scripture. The people of Sodom were ungodly, and sinful. In describing this place God says "their sin is very grievous"(Genesis 18:20). God had decided that they were to be destroyed for their opposition to God. Abraham, who we know was a godly man, had a conversation before the Lord and proposed an offer, not to save the city, but to save the righteous people from it. The Lord had already stated at this point that Sodom and Gomorrah were going to be destroyed, however, when Abraham asked to spare the city if there was just 50 righteous people in it, God said He would, except there were not 50 righteous at all. Then Abraham suggested 45 and down he went. There were not even 10 righteous people. God had promised that justice would be served, and it was.
God had still kept His promise to Sodom, and it was destroyed. It was destroyed because the city was okay, or because God had nothing better to do. It wasn't because God had just idly picked out Sodom from other cities, but God had taken out Sodom because of their evil ways. God judged Sodom, and judged the city properly. In Genesis 18:25, a very profound statement is made. "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" God is the perfect Judge, and He always judges perfectly and righteously.
There may be times when we would question God's judgment, but the truth is, God always judges completely fair, never biased, unlike human judges. We must also realize that God will judge this world, and that Sodom was just an example, every person will bow their knee and everyone will confess Jesus as Lord (Philippians 2:10). God promised judgment to Sodom and He promises it to this world. Justice will be served!
