Sabbath the Second

4/20/2012

We are working our way through the Seven Sabbaths Unique to Luke, and we began with a look at what the Sabbath was then peered into the first Sabbath in Luke that only Luke mentions. Today we shall look at the second.
This is found in Luke 4:31-37. We find here that Jesus taught in the synagogue and His teaching was "with power". Of course it was, it was the Lord speaking! I sometimes wish I had the opportunity to have heard great preachers, like Charles Spurgeon, or John Wesley, or Martin Luther, or the Apostle Paul, but to hear the Lord preach! Amazing! Then we find a possessed man and Jesus commands the demon out of the man. The people were amazed at the authority, and Jesus fame rang throughout the country.
The power of Jesus is unparallelled. He is Omnipotent, all-powerful, and He can do anything. The demons shudder at His power, Satan trembles at His authority, and we also are saved because of His power over death! We must always realize that Jesus is bigger, stronger and more powerful than any foe. On that Sabbath day Jesus showed who He was by His power, authenticating His message as well as healing a man. Praise God for His power!

The First Sabbath

The last post began a mini-series on the Seven Sabbaths in Luke. There are seven specific Sabbaths that are unique to the book of Luke, and I want to look at them. We we will begin with the first in this post.
The first is found in Luke 4:16-30. Jesus had gone to His hometown, Nazareth. He went into the synagogue as was His custom. It was an ordinary thing for Him to do, as it was for all Jews to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath. He then began to read from Isaiah 61:1,2. He stopped reading and the people were in shock and awe. They knew Him as the son of Joseph, not the Son of God. Verse 24 is very interesting, "No prophet is accepted in his own country." Jesus even gives the example of Elijah and the widow in Zarephath. Elijah had to go to Zarephath partly because no one took him in in his own country. Then the example of Elisha and Naaman the Leper. The people were greatly upset at him and tried to kill him. But He passed through them all and left Nazareth.
It is interesting how the people of Nazareth proved Jesus point. No prophet is accepted in his own country, and Jesus was not accepted in His country, homeland. Then a miracle is done,  Jesus passed through the midst of the people, and they couldn't kill Him. Later, the people would kill Him, they would exclaim "His blood be on us and our children!" An amazing thought, Jesus, Savior of the World, was hated by His own people. I have often wondered how Jesus passed through the people without injury. I believe it was a miracle. Jesus left Nazareth and ministered throughout the land. He was rejected and despised in Nazareth, and in a very short period of time He would be rejected by the whole Jewish race. It was this rejection that brought salvation to all mankind. What a sabbath this was! Praise the Lord that on that day He showed the people of Nazareth that it was He who was to Preach the Gospel, heal the brokenhearted, deliver the captive, recovering sight to the blind, giving liberty to the bruised, and preaching the acceptable year of the
