5 Solas

At Maranatha Bible Church, we are proud to be a Protestant, evangelical, and Gospel-believing church that stands firmly in the rich tradition of the Protestant Reformation. Central to our identity are the 5 Solas, key theological principles that emerged during the Reformation. These five foundational truths continue to shape our beliefs, worship, and ministry today.

The 5 Solas summarize the heart of the Christian faith, emphasizing God’s sovereignty, grace, and the sufficiency of Christ's work for our salvation. They guide how we understand Scripture, salvation, and the Christian life, and they inform everything we do as a church body. Here is a breakdown of each Sola and what it means for how we function as a church. Our church even though not a Reformed Baptist church still holds to the truth of the 5 Solas.

1. Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone: The Bible is the ultimate authority for all matters of faith and practice. Sola Scriptura means that the Word of God, as revealed in the Bible, is the only infallible source of authority for Christian life. No tradition, opinion, or human authority can supersede what is written in Scripture.
What This Means for Us:
  • Our preaching and teaching are rooted in the Bible. We believe that the Bible is sufficient to guide us in every aspect of life.
  • We value personal Bible reading and study, encouraging everyone in the church to be immersed in the Word of God.
  • Our doctrines and beliefs are grounded in Scripture, not in the opinions of man or the traditions of the church.

2. Sola Fide: Faith Alone: We are justified before God by faith alone. This means that salvation is not earned by our works, but it is a free gift given by God's grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ. Faith, and faith alone, is the instrument by which we receive the righteousness of Christ.
What This Means for Us:
  • We emphasize the need for personal faith in Christ. Salvation is not about our good works, but about trusting in Jesus as our Savior.
  • As a church, we preach the message of the Gospel—that salvation is available to all through faith in Christ alone.
  • Our ministry to others is motivated by love and a desire for others to experience the same grace that we have received.

3. Sola Gratia: Grace Alone: Salvation is a gift of God’s grace alone. It is not something we can earn, but is given freely by God’s undeserved mercy. Grace is the unmerited favor of God that brings salvation to sinners, and it is the foundation of our relationship with God.
What This Means for Us:
  • We rely entirely on God's grace for everything we have and do. Without grace, none of us could stand before God.
  • We extend grace to one another within our church community, showing kindness, forgiveness, and patience as we grow together in Christ.
  • Our worship and gratitude to God flow from the understanding that we are completely dependent on His grace.

4. Solus Christus: Christ Alone: Salvation is found in Christ alone. Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man, and His atoning death and resurrection are the sole basis for our justification. There is no other Savior, and no other way to God except through Him.
What This Means for Us:
  • We center all of our teaching, preaching, and ministry on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
  • We celebrate the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice, knowing that His work on the cross alone accomplishes what is necessary for our salvation.
  • Our mission as a church is to proclaim the message of Christ and Him crucified to the world.

5. Soli Deo Gloria: To the Glory of God Alone: All things exist for the glory of God alone. The purpose of our lives, our worship, and our ministry is to magnify and honor God in all things. Every action, decision, and expression of faith is done to reflect His glory and His greatness.
What This Means for Us:
  • Our worship is not about us, but about glorifying God. We seek to honor Him with our hearts, our voices, and our lives.
  • We encourage our members to live all of life in light of God’s glory, whether at home, at work, or in the community.
  • Our church's mission is not only to build a community but to advance God's kingdom for His glory, sharing the hope of the Gospel with others.

How the 5 Solas Shape Our Life TogetherAt Maranatha Bible Church, the 5 Solas are not merely theological ideas—they are the driving force behind our community life, our ministry, and our worship. They shape our beliefs, influence our actions, and point us to the only source of hope for a lost and broken world.
  • Preaching & Teaching: We commit to teaching the Word of God faithfully and clearly, ensuring that Scripture alone is our guide.
  • Worship: Our worship is God-centered, grounded in the truth of Christ’s work and aimed at giving God all the glory.
  • Community: We cultivate a church family where grace is extended, faith is nurtured, and Christ is proclaimed in every conversation and action.
  • Mission: Our mission is to share the message of salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone, so that all may come to know Him and glorify God.
We invite you to join us in this mission, standing firm in these essential truths that not only define who we are as a church but also shape how we live, worship, and serve.
